Scientific Breakthrough:

Dry shampoo, once considered a last resort by consumers, has undergone a metamorphosis thanks to advancements in high-tech formulations. Today's dry shampoos not only offer odor reduction, but also provide nourishing scalp care and more eco-friendly application methods, all in line with broader consumer trends. For example, Batiste has launched its "smartest dry shampoo yet", featuring sweat-activated technology that keeps hair fresh during and after physical activity. Meanwhile, K18 Hair has introduced a "high-tech" dry shampoo designed to extend the time between washes while ensuring hair looks, feels, and smells great. Online beauty retailer Lookfantastic has already reported a 42% increase in dry shampoo sales from August 2023 to August 2024,¹ reflecting consumers' renewed interest in dry shampoos.

Regulations & Compliance:

The popular ingredient tea tree oil — loved by many cosmetic brands for its antibacterial properties — is under threat of being banned in the UK and EU over reprotoxicity. Regulators have concluded that this ingredient is toxic to reproduction, after studies found that when rats ingested medium to high doses of tea tree oil, it had a negative impact on the male reproductive system. Industry representatives are challenging this, arguing that the data is inappropriate for evaluating potential human impacts. They claim that the effects shown are species-specific, and question whether the force-feeding process is representative for identifying risks in humans, who use tea tree oil topically and at much lower concentrations.

Looking for a tea tree oil replacement? Consider using eucalyptus oil for its camphoraceous scent and antibacterial properties; menthol; or a synthetic cooling agent. 

Company Update:

Biochemicals company Nature Coatings is entering the cosmetics market very soon with a line of black pigments. Nature Coatings harnesses waste materials to create bio-based, safe and renewable solutions benefiting people and the environment. This new cosmetics line aims to be a direct offset of Carbon Black and Black 2, two black pigments commonly used in color cosmetics. CEO Jane Palmer said, "The new cosmetics grade of BioBlack will not compromise on accessibility, affordability, performance, quality, and safety. This is a first-of-its-kind pigment solution, and we're excited to share it with the cosmetics industry."

Sustainability Update:

In a recent update, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has confirmed the delay of mandatory labelling provisions under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for packaging. Originally set for implementation by April 2027, these labeling requirements, aimed at simplifying recycling for consumers, have been removed from the draft statutory instrument (SI) scheduled to pass by the end of 2024. Defra has confirmed that the UK Governments remain committed to introducing mandatory labeling, aiming to make it easier for consumers to understand how to recycle packaging correctly.
