Scientific Breakthrough:
It can be challenging to find a sustainable alternative for palm oil in beauty products, as not all oils are necessarily good for the planet — or the skin. THG Labs has taken on the challenge by partnering with Clean Food Group, to develop personal care products made with eco-friendly oils sourced from food waste. This upcycled oil leverages Clean Food Group's fermentation technology, feeding scalable non-GMO yeast strains on waste bread, and turning them into "bio-equivalent alternatives" to resource-intensive and highly polluting oils.
Regulations & Compliance:
"Skin lightening" products, particularly those containing hydroquinone or mercury, have raised significant health and ethical concerns. These products can cause serious harm, including skin damage, an increased risk of skin cancer, and liver failure. Despite these dangers and the rising number of bans, these products continue to attract buyers, particularly in places where societal pressure surrounding beauty standards often drives demand for lighter skin. A recent case in London saw a woman fined £16k, after Swedish authorities flagged her for selling toxic, banned skin lightening products containing hydroquinone.
This troubling trend highlights the ongoing global conversation around both the safety and ethics of skin lightening products.

From nourishing creams to invigorating scrubs, Birkenstock's holistic approach promotes balance and wellbeing.
Sustainability Update:
The European Commission is enhancing its support for the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), by proposing an additional 12 months for phasing-in. If approved by the European Parliament and the Council, the law would take effect on December 30, 2025 for large companies, and June 30, 2026, for micro- and small businesses. While the technical tools for implementation are already in place, this extra time will help ensure proper and effective rollout.
💡EUDR Crash Course: The EU Deforestation Regulation aims to prevent commodities linked to deforestation from being sold in the EU. It requires companies to verify that their products don't come from deforested lands post-2020, and ensures compliance with local laws in the countries of origin. In the beauty and personal care industry, this regulation will most likely affect brands sourcing ingredients like palm oil, cocoa, and soy, which are often linked to deforestation.
