The British healthcare company Boots is boosting in-store skincare support with a new AI-powered SmartSkin Checker and dermatology training program for pharmacists, developed with L'Oréal and Dr. Justine Hextall.
Approved by the British Association of Dermatologists, the program empowers pharmacists to advise on conditions like acne, eczema, and rosacea—no appointment required. The AI tool screens over 70 skin issues via photo uploads, helping Boots ease pressure on GPs and become a go-to destination for expert skin advice.
Regulations & Compliance:
The European Commission has announced plans to finalize its "Save Cruelty Free Cosmetics" roadmap by early 2026, paving the way for a gradual shift to non-animal testing across chemical and cosmetic safety assessments.
The roadmap will outline how to integrate New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) into 15 legislative areas, including REACH. While implementation will start soon after release, progress will depend on scientific validation of alternatives.
Company Update:
L'Oréal has acquired a majority share in British skincare brand Medik8, bolstering its dermocosmetics portfolio and signaling renewed momentum in strategic beauty M&A. Private equity firm Inflexion will retain a minority stake.
The move strengthens L'Oréal's leadership in science-backed skincare, while Medik8 gains access to the group's global scale and expertise.
Sustainability Update:
Procter & Gamble has introduced a new low-carbon decision-making framework to help manufacturers reduce emissions across the supply chain—especially in cosmetics and personal care.
Developed with Derham and Newcastle Universities, the tool combines lifecycle assessment and technoeconomic analysis to evaluate decarbonisation technologies. Early results highlight the importance of green electricity and hydrogen in cutting emissions from chemical processes. The initiative supports P&G's goals to cut Scope 3 emissions by 40% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2040.
